Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani received Russia’s Ambassador to Iraq, Mr. Maxim Maximov, along with Russia's Consul-General in Erbil, Mr. Levin Oleg Vladimirovich. Discussions focused on relations with the Russian Federation and the contributions of its energy firms to the economy of the Kurdistan Region.
Discussions also covered political and security situations and upcoming elections in Iraq, Erbil-Baghdad relations including ongoing efforts to resolve disagreements, terrorist threats including ISIS, and other issues of mutual interest.
President Nechirvan Barzani and Ambassador Maximov agreed to further strengthen, expand, and diversify Erbil-Moscow relations. The importance was highlighted of visit exchanges to expand cooperation beyond energy into agriculture and manufacturing. Practical steps discussed included Kurdistan Region representatives in Iraqi delegations visiting Russia. Direct flights between the Kurdistan Region and the Russian Federation were also discussed.
