Erbil, Kurdistan Region, 11 July 2018 - During his official visit to Paris, President of the Kurdistan Region Nechirvan Barzani met with the Kurdish diaspora and friends of Kurdistan in France..
In the meeting, the President delivered a speech. Below is the text of the speech:
I am pleased to meet with the Kurdish diaspora today as part of my visit to Paris. Similarly, I am pleased our French friends, Iraqi ambassador to France and a number of embassies are present here. I welcome you all.
Our visit to Paris was based on the invitation of President Emmanuel Macron. We had a productive meeting yesterday at the Elysee Palace. As you know, the relations between the Kurdistan Region and France are historical. France was a leading country that decided to establish the safe-haven in the Kurdistan Region to protect our people. Following that, our relations continued, especially with President François Mitterrand.
A year before the referendum, France had a significant role in supporting the Kurdistan Region. I believe, if it were not for that support of France, there would have been alarming difficulties. It was not clear what situation with which the Kurdistan Region will end. France opened its doors for us and made sincere efforts with other European countries and with Baghdad to resolve the issues.
I am pleased that after a year and a few months of our meeting with President Macron, Kurdistan has entered a completely new stage. Our relations with Baghdad are improved, and we hope, in conformity with the Iraq Constitution, we resolve all the issues that have been outstanding for years. We believe that by working with the new Government of Iraq under the leadership of Adel Abdul-Mahdi we can find solutions to these issues.
The Kurdish issue in the Middle East is a serious matter, it needs to be solved politically within the countries in which they have Kurdish population, each country according to their own circumstances.
I am pleased to announce that, yesterday, the new cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government was formed with Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, Goran Movement, Social Democratic Party of Kurdistan and Turkmen and Christian political parties.
We look optimistically to the future of the Kurdistan Region, and we will dedicate our best efforts to maintain the Kurdistan Region as a stabilizing factor in the area.
Thank you.
