During the second day of his visit to Baghdad, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani met with a number of Iraqi leaders and political parties, including Mr. Ammar al-Hakim, President of the Al-Hikma Movement, Mr. Osama al-Nujaifi, President of the Salvation and Development Front, Mr. Jamal Al-Dari, Secretary General of the Iraqi National Project, Mr. Nouri al-Maliki, President of the State of Law Coalition, Mr. Hadi al-Ameri, President of the Fath Coalition, Mr. Haider al-Abadi, President of the Victory Alliance, Dr. Nassar al-Rubaie, Chairman of the Political Committee of the Sadrist Movement and members of the committee.
Discussions focused on the political, economic and security conditions of Iraq and the current challenges facing the country, Erbil-Baghdad relations and the dialogue between them to solve outstanding problems, the dangers of terrorism and the threats of ISIS, Iraq's relations with the countries of the region and the world, the upcoming Iraqi elections and the situation in the greater region.
President Nechirvan Barzani commended the cooperation and coordination among the Iraqi parties in ratifying the budget bill, expressing hope that this will be the beginning of a move towards solving other pending problems of Iraq in general and those between the Iraqi Federal Government and the Kurdistan Regional Government in particular. The President reiterated the willingness of the Kurdistan Region to solve the disagreements between Erbil and Baghdad through dialogue and on the basis of the constitution, stating: “All of us in Iraq have had our share of errors; we must open a new chapter with a common vision for the future to solve the problems, and to learn from the experiences and errors of the past.”
President Nechirvan Barzani stressed that the stability and progress of Iraq and the restoration of its position depended on resolving its internal problems and that resolving the problems of the Kurdistan Region with the Federal Government is the key to stability and a better future for all Iraq. Iraq becomes stronger when it resolves its longstanding issues. Therefore, it is important that there are continuous meetings and exchanges among all Iraqi parties.
"The strength, security and stability of Iraq are interconnected. A new political generation has emerged in Iraq. Together in Iraq, we must all come to a common understanding of a better future and resolve the problems. Iraq is rich in human and natural resources. All parties and communities must participate in the political process and the administration of the country and have equal duties and rights. Iraq needs to strengthen its institutions and the Iraqi people everywhere in the country deserve a better life and expect more services.”
During the meetings, the Iraqi parties, for their part, commended President Nechirvan Barzani’s visit to Baghdad, referring to his meetings with political leaders and parties as important steps, and expressed hope that it would lead to a serious dialogue between the parties on Iraq’s problems, cooperation and coordination on ways to resolve them and strengthen partnership among all.
