President Nechirvan Barzani issued a statement on the second anniversary of the passing of former Iraqi President and Secretary General of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, Jalal Talabani.
Below is President Barzani’s statement:
Today, on the anniversary of the passing of Mam Jalal, we remember a patriotic leader who left a large gap on the political stage and the state affairs. In the midst of the challenges of today’s Iraq and the greater region, we feel the need of Mam Jalal more than ever. He was truly a symbol of collaboration and partnership.
The close relations between President Mam Jalal and President Masoud Barzani resulted in a chapter of successful cooperation in Kurdistan, which led to the achievement of many legitimate rights for the people of the Kurdistan Region in the Iraqi Opposition Congress documents and the Constitution of Iraq. For the first time, a strong position was secured for the Kurdish people and other minorities in the institutions of the Iraqi state, and democracy was ultimately strengthened.
Mam Jalal was a strong supporter of me in the process of instilling the principle of collaboration and joint efforts to run the Kurdistan Region, especially during the formation of the fifth cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government, as well as unifying decisions regarding many political and administrative issues in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.
Today, we remember the passing of Mam Jalal and the best way to pay tribute to him is to protect the unity of our nation, to work together to resolve political and issues and to strengthen coordination between the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Patriotic Union of Kurdistan and all other Kurdistani parties on critical issues related to the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.
Today, we honor the late Mam Jalal and we hope that his legacy will continue to strengthen our unity.

Nechirvan Barzani
