Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani received Italian Defense Minister Lorenzo Guerini and his accompanying delegation in Erbil on Tuesday.
At the meeting, the general security situation in Iraq, the role and mission of the coalition troops, the recent threats made by armed groups against embassies and diplomatic missions in Iraq, and ISIS terror movements were discussed.
Both sides stressed the importance of joint efforts and cooperation with the International Coalition to defeat ISIS in Iraq. The President and the Defense Minister agreed that Iraq and the Kurdistan Region will continue to need the support of the Coalition to confront terror activities. In this regard, Defense Minister Guerini reaffirmed his country’s support to the Kurdistan Region.
President Nechirvan Barzani expressed the Kurdistan Region’s gratitude and appreciation for Italy’s military and humanitarian assistance to the Kurdistan Region and Iraq. The President also thanked the Italian Parliament’s decision to extend the mission of Italian troops in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region and extended his greetings to all Italian troops that are currently serving in the Kurdistan Region.
President Nechirvan Barzani expressed concern over the recent security developments in Iraq and threats of armed groups on foreign diplomatic missions. The President stated: “The work and duties of the diplomatic missions and the International Coalition in Iraq are important and necessary to ensure cooperation and support to Iraq. Therefore, it is important to fully preserve its security. The Kurdistan Region fully supports Prime Minister Mustafa AL-Kadhimi’s efforts and measures to confront the existing threats.”
The meeting, which was attended by the Kurdistan Region Minister of Peshmerga, also covered the latest developments on the COVID-19 pandemic, Italy’s experience with the outbreak and its containment, and other topics of mutual interest.
