President Nechirvan Barzani welcomed Major General Kevin Leahy, the Commander of the Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve, and his accompanying delegation to discuss the current security dynamics in the region and the joint efforts to fight ISIS in Iraq and Syria.
Both sides reaffirmed that ISIS continues to pose a significant threat, jeopardizing regional peace and stability through its ongoing attacks in Iraq and Syria. They stressed the necessity of maintaining the international coalition's mission and fostering collaboration between the Iraqi army and the Peshmerga to defeat and eliminate ISIS.
Discussions also shed light on the ongoing process of Peshmerga reunification. President Nechirvan Barzani emphasized the Kurdistan Region's resolve to conduct reforms in the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs and unify the Peshmerga, while also addressing the need to eliminate any hindrances to this process and also praised the support and cooperation of the International Coalition in this regard.
In the meeting, views were exchanged regarding the recent developments in the Middle East, and agreed on the necessity of preserving stability and preventing further escalation in the Middle East.
The meeting was attended by the KRG Minister of Peshmerga, the Chief of Staff of the Peshmerga and the US Consul General in the Kurdistan Region.
