President Nechirvan Barzani receives Germany’s Consul General in the Kurdistan Region

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani received Germany’ Consul General in the Kurdistan Region, Klemens Semtner, in Erbil on Thursday.

In the meeting, the latest developments in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, the ongoing efforts to contain the COVID-19 pandemic, confronting terror activities, and the mission of German forces in the Kurdistan Region as part of the International Coalition to defeat ISIS were discussed.
The two sides also exchanged views on the upcoming early elections in Iraq and the latest developments in the current talks between Erbil and Baghdad to resolve disagreements.

President Nechirvan Barzani reiterated the appreciation and gratitude of the Kurdistan Region to Germany for its military and humanitarian support and contributions, especially during difficult times with the war against ISIS.

The President highly valued Germany’s humanitarian aid to the refugees and the displaced people in the Kurdistan Region, as well as receiving many Yazidi citizens in Germany after their rescue from ISIS captivity.

The President also discussed developments in Iraq and underlined that solving the domestic disagreements will lead to stability in the country.

On his part, the Consul General reiterated his country’s support to the Kurdistan Region and commended the Peshmerga forces, the role of the Kurdistan Region in the defeat of ISIS and for hosting refugees from Syria and Iraqi IDPs from all communities. Mr. Semtner expressed his country’s readiness to further strengthen ties with the Kurdistan Region.
