Today marks the 38th anniversary of the Badinan Anfal, which took place between August 25 and September 6, 1988, in the final phase of the Anfal campaigns. In those days, the former Iraqi regime turned its weapons — including banned munitions — against the civilians of Badinan and against the region’s water, land, air, and environment. We remember and honor all the martyrs and victims of the Badinan Anfal, as well as the all victims of Anfal across Kurdistan, and we bow our heads before their memory.
The Anfal was a grave crime, recognized by the Supreme Iraqi Criminal Tribunal as genocide, a war crime, and a crime against humanity. On this anniversary, we again call on the Federal Government of Iraq to provide both material and moral compensation to the families of the Anfal victims and to all those who suffered under the former regime’s atrocities in the Kurdistan Region. At the same time, we must press on with our efforts to secure international recognition of the Anfal as genocide.
The crimes and destruction of the past must stand as a lasting lesson and a warning for Iraq: that oppression and violation in all their forms are never allowed to return, and that the constitutional rights of the people of Kurdistan and all its communities are protected. We underline the importance of prosperity, unity, peaceful coexistence, and cooperation among all political parties, so that we may secure a peaceful and stable future for our people.
Peace be upon the martyrs of the Badinan Anfal and all the martyrs of Kurdistan. We will always remember with gratitude and respect the patriotic and generous response of the people of Erbil and the surrounding areas, who opened their arms to those displaced from Badinan during the hard days of the Jazhnikan camp.
