Erbil, Kurdistan Region, June 5, 2021

We strongly condemn the attack this morning that was carried out by the PKK gunmen in Matina subdistrict of Amedi, Dohuk province, on Peshmarga forces, which left five Peshmerga soldiers killed and several others wounded. We extend our condolences to the families of the fallen heroes. We share their grief and wish the wounded a speedy recovery.

We reiterate that PKK’s aggression against the Kurdistan Region must stop immediately. These unjustifiable actions against the people of the Kurdistan Region have continued over the past three decades and caused endless misery for the civil population, preventing the much-needed reconstruction of hundreds of villages and localities in the Kurdistan Region.

The PKK has continuously stirred up conflicts and showed complete lack of respect for the administration and laws of the Kurdistan Region. It has continued to pose threats and dangers to peace and stability of our country and people.

Once again, we urge and warn the PKK not to stir up tensions and conflicts, and move their gunmen away from the borders of the Kurdistan Region. It must respect the Kurdistan Region’s administration and sovereignty and refrain from using the Kurdistan Region as a base to launch attacks on neighboring countries and disturb peace and stability. Iraq’s Federal Government is expected to fulfill its duties and responsibilities with regards to these events.
