Erbil, Kurdistan Region, May 1, 2021
Last night, ISIS terrorists attacked Peshmerga forces near the village of Qaya Bashi in Pirde district, Kirkuk province. As a result, three Peshmerga's lost their lives as they bravely responded to the ISIS attack. We offer our heartfelt condolences to the families of the fallen heroes and wish the injured a speedy recovery.
We have repeatedly warned Iraq’s Federal Government and the International Coalition Against ISIS of a resurgent ISIS and of the continued threats by the terror group taking advantage of security vacuum in the disputed territories. Last night's assault on the Peshmerga positions was part of a series of other attacks by ISIS.
Once again, we urge Iraq’s Parliament, Federal Government and the International Coalition Against ISIS to accelerate the formation of the joint forces of the Peshmerga and the Iraqi Army in the disputed territories, in order to prevent ISIS from using these areas as a corridor for terrorist activities. The ISIS resurgence poses real threats to the stability and security of the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, the wider region and the entire world.
The Kurdistan Region welcomes all forms of cooperation in order to build this partnership and coordination urgently.
