President Nechirvan Barzani received Mr. Mark Bryson-Richardson, the Ambassador of the United Kingdom to Iraq and his accompanying delegation, in Erbil on Sunday.
Discussions focused on a wide range of issues including the latest political developments in the country, the recent election of the Presidency of the Council of Representatives of Iraq, and the current talks among parties on the political process in the country including the election of the president and formation of the new government. Erbil-Baghdad ties and the UK’s bilateral relations with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region were highlighted.
President Nechirvan Barzani reiterated the importance of political stability in Iraq, and affirmed the significance of mutual trust and understanding among Iraqi factions and parties within the political process for the country and its future.
The President and the Ambassador referred to the significance of unity and common purpose among Kurdistan Region’s political factions in Baghdad and expressed hope that the talks and efforts of the political parties will lead to mutual understanding and political stability. They also stated that the friends and allies of Iraq attach great importance to the talks among Iraqi parties.
Ambassador Bryson-Richardson reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s commitment to continue working with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region and offered his appreciation to President Nechirvan Barzani for supporting the reform process in the Peshmerga Ministry, and reiterated his country’s continued support to reorganizing the Peshmerga.
Discussions also covered the latest security developments in the country including the attacks on diplomatic missions and offices of political parties in Baghdad. The COVID-19 pandemic, the migration and developments in the wider region were also highlighted at their meeting, which was attended by the UK Consul General in Erbil and the Defense Advisor of the UK Consulate General in Erbil.
