Kurdistan Region President appreciates France’s support to Kurdistan Region

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani received France’s Ambassador to Iraq Mr. Bruno Aubert and the director of the Crisis and Support Center of France’s Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Mr. Eric Chevallier, and their accompanying delegation, in Erbil on Tuesday.

President Nechirvan Barzani reiterated the Kurdistan Region’s appreciation and gratitude for France’s political, military, and humanitarian support to the Kurdistan Region. The President hailed the construction of a hospital in Shingal (Sinjar) by a French NGO and pledged that the Kurdistan Region Presidency, together with France and other partners, will take part in the construction of the hospital.

The President stressed that Iraq and the Kurdistan Region need the support of France and the international community, especially the continuation of the international coalition’s mission to confront terrorism, and also their help to resolve Iraq’s disagreements with the Kurdistan Region. The visiting delegation, for their part, reaffirmed the support of their country for Iraq and the Kurdistan Region to confront terrorism, resolve the disagreements between the two sides, and the continuation of their country’s humanitarian aid to the country.

On the conditions of Iraq’s internally displaced people (IDPs) living in the camps hosted by the Kurdistan Region and the issue of their return to their home areas, President Nechirvan Barzani reiterated the Kurdistan Region’s support for the voluntary return of the IDPs to their home areas.
The President also emphasized the need to reconstruct the areas damaged by the war on terror, restore security, peace, and basic public services for the IDPs in their home areas in order to facilitate their voluntary return.

At the meeting, which was also attended by France’s Consul General in Erbil, Mr. Olivier Decottignie, the latest political and security developments in Iraq, confronting the threats of the ISIS terrorists, the Erbil-Baghdad agreement on the status of Shingal, the upcoming elections in Iraq, the relations of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region with the neighboring countries and other issues of mutual interest were also highlighted.
