Kurdistan Region President chairs joint KDP-PUK meeting

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani chaired a joint meeting between the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), attended by Mr. Bafel Talabani, the co-leader of the PUK, in Erbil on Monday.

President Nechirvan Barzani thanked the two delegations for the joint meeting which shed light on the general political situation and developments in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. The discussions also covered the current hardships that have gripped the people of the Kurdistan Region, especially economically, in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak and its implications for Iraq, Kurdistan Region, and the rest of the world.

The President reiterated the importance of mutual cooperation among all political parties in the Kurdistan Region, especially between the KDP and the PUK, and expressed the readiness of the Kurdistan Region Presidency to support all efforts aimed at bringing about further cooperation and coordination among all parties.

Both delegations, openly and responsibly, discussed the issues of bilateral concern and reaffirmed their commitment to mutual responsibility towards the political process and governance in the Kurdistan Region. They also recognized the need to take serious and practical steps together with the other parties in the Kurdistan Region in order to resolve the disagreements among them. They agreed to unify their efforts to face the current situation and to lend support to the Kurdistan Region’s institutions in order to better serve the citizens.

The security situation in the Kurdistan Region and respecting the political and constitutional entity of the Region was underlined as both sides agreed that safeguarding the peace and stability of the Kurdistan Region remains everyone’s duty.

Both sides reiterated their support for the preparations that the Federal Government and its relevant institutions are making to hold the early elections in Iraq. In this regard, coordination and cooperation among the Kurdistan Region representatives in Baghdad were highly appreciated and encouraged to continue.

Both sides assessed the implementation of political and administrative agreements between both parties, including the issue of decentralization, and pledged to support the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) efforts with regards to crystalizing the decentralization process in the Kurdistan Region and transferring power to local authorities. Both sides also agreed to take shared responsibility vis-à-vis issues affecting the Region and stressed the necessity to eliminate red tape in the KRG institutions in order to provide better public services. Both sides pledged to continue their joint work to implement all the existing agreements between them with proper mechanisms.

At the end of the meeting, both sides emphasized on the continuation of coordination and mutual work among all the Region’s institutions in order to better serve the citizens and assist them to surpass the current economic hardships in the Region.
