Erbil, Kurdistan Region, October 17, 2020
Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani issued a statement on Monday, condemning the attack on the headquarters of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) in Baghdad, where rioters set fire to the KDP head office and burned the flag of Kurdistan. Below is the statement:
On Monday morning, a group of culprits set the headquarters of the Kurdistan Democratic Party in Baghdad ablaze. During the attack, the flag of Kurdistan as well as the photos of the Kurdish national symbols were set on fire, while the flag of the Popular Mobilization Force (PMF) was raised.
We condemn this attack and view it as an act of sabotage. Attacking the headquarters of a political party, which was a main force in the overthrow of the dictatorship in Iraq, is also an attack against the history of the shared struggle of the Kurds and the revolutionary Iraqi forces who fought jointly against despotism and dictatorship in the past. The assault is a threat against peaceful coexistence and is an attempt to derail political and social harmony in the country. Such behaviors are also against constitutional principles, democratic values, and human rights.
The Peshmerga, the PMF, and Iraq’s armed forces jointly made history in the war against ISIS. We are hopeful this shared history will lead to continued political cooperation, in order to assist the people of Iraq to overcome the current hardships.
No inflammatory comments or arguments should imperil this new commonality of Iraq’s peoples and communities. Everyone should utilize their joint struggle in the past in order to help the Federal Government of Iraq to better serve the Iraqi people.
We urge all sides to address this incident with restraint, as we also urge the relevant authorities of the Federal Government to launch a serious investigation and bring perpetrators to justice.
