Kurdistan Region President holds meeting with U.K. Minister of Defense

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani met with Mr. Ben Wallace, the Minister of Defense of the United Kingdom, in London on Wednesday.

At the meeting, attended by the UK Minister of the Armed Forces and the UK Ambassador to Iraq, the latest developments in the fight against terrorism in Iraq and the threats posed by the resurgence of ISIS were highlighted.

Both sides agreed that ISIS is still a considerable threat to the security and stability of Iraq, the wider region and the world. The international community’s continued support to Iraq and the Kurdistan Region to completely eliminate ISIS was affirmed.

Minister of Defense reiterated the persistent commitment of the UK forces to eliminate ISIS, and underlined his country’s full support for Iraq and the Kurdistan Region in confronting terrorism. Mr. Wallace expressed gratitude for the sacrifices of the Peshmerga and praised the role of the Kurdistan Region in defeating the terror network.

For his part, President Nechirvan Barzani reiterated his appreciation for the UK’s role and its support to Iraq and the Kurdistan Region in the war on terrorism, and highly valued its military aid. The President referred, particularly, to the UK advisers, their teams and training of the Peshmerga forces.

The importance of cooperation and coordination between the Peshmerga and the Iraqi army with the support from the international coalition to confront terrorism, reforms and steps taken towards unifying the Peshmerga forces, the security situation in Iraq and the wider region, and other topics of mutual interest were highlighted.
