Kurdistan Region President meets with the US Ambassador to Iraq

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani received the Unites States Ambassador to Iraq Matthew Tueller and his accompanying delegation in Erbil on Tuesday.

In the meeting, both sides shed light on the security and political situation in Iraq, the Kurdistan Region and Iraq’s relations with the United States and the Iraq – U.S. strategic dialogue. Both sides also discussed ways to deal with the threats of terror, confronting ISIS, and the importance of international support to Iraq in the fight against terror. The two sides also exchanged views regarding the ongoing efforts to resolve the Erbil-Baghdad disagreements and the upcoming elections in Iraq.

The President and the Ambassador agreed that joint efforts and cooperation among Iraq’s political parties and communities are crucial to overcome the issues and challenges that the country is facing. Both sides also agreed that the international community can contribute and assist in this regard.

President Nechirvan Barzani thanked the United States for its recent military aids to the Kurdistan Region, which was delivered to the Kurdistan Regional Government’s Ministry of Peshmerga as part of the U.S. military assistance to Iraq in the fight against terrorism and ISIS.

On his part, the U.S. Ambassador commended the atmosphere of peaceful coexistence and tolerance among communities in the Kurdistan Region and highlighted the Kurdistan Region’s important role in maintaining stability in the wider region. Ambassador Tueller also reaffirmed the support of the United States to a strong Kurdistan Region within a federal Iraq.

The latest developments on the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing efforts to contain its spread in the country, Iraq and Kurdistan Region’s ties with neighboring countries, the importance of joint efforts to maintain stability in the wider region in general, and issues of bilateral concern were discussed in the meeting.
