Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani met with the United Kingdom’s Ambassador to Iraq Stephen Hickey on Sunday.
At the meeting, also attended by British Consul General in Erbil James Thornton, the latest developments about the COVID-19 pandemic and the current efforts to contain its spread in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region were discussed. The two sides also exchanged views about the wide-ranging consequences of the pandemic, particularly its impact on the economies of the Kurdistan Region, Iraq and the world and ways to confront it.
Both sides also shed light on the recent developments in Iraq and the latest steps taken by the newly formed government of Iraq led by Prime Minister Mustafa Al- Kadhimi. They also discussed the issues and challenges facing the new government, relations between the federal government and the Kurdistan Region, pending issues between both sides and efforts to resolve them on the basis of the constitution of Iraq.
Discussions also focused on the threats posed by the resurgence of ISIS terrorists and their recent attacks and movements in several areas in Iraq, where civilians and Iraqi forces were targeted. Both sides also reiterated the importance of the International Coalition’s continued support to Iraq and the Kurdistan Region in confronting terror as well as continued cooperation and coordination between Erbil and Baghdad.
The latest developments in the Kurdistan Region, the UK’s relations with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region and best ways to further develop them and the Iraq-U.S. strategic dialogue were also highlighted at the meeting.
