Kurdistan Region President receives Hungary’s State Secretary

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani received Mr. Tristan Azbej, Hungary’s State Secretary for the Aid of Persecuted Christians.

President Nechirvan Barzani expressed the Kurdistan Region’s gratitude for Hungary’s military and humanitarian assistance to the refugees and the internally displaced Christians and Yezidis in the Region. The President reiterated that the refugees and IDPs in the Kurdistan Region need broader international support and assistance.

At the meeting, attended by Mr. István Emri, the Consul General of Hungary in Erbil, Mr. Azbej reiterated his country’s appreciation for the role of the Peshmerga forces in protecting the Christians and other communities and pledged to continue Hungarian cooperation and support to the Kurdistan Region, the refugees and the IDPs.

The Minister also appreciated the culture of coexistence, tolerance and mutual respect among all religious and ethnic communities in the Kurdistan Region and recognized the value of His Holiness Pope Francis’ apostolic journey to Kurdistan as a confirmation of the existing culture of tolerance in the Region. The Minister expressed hope that the apostolic journey will further consolidate this culture.

Discussions also focused on COVID-19 pandemic and the vaccination efforts, strengthening of Iraq’s and the Kurdistan Region’s mutual ties with Hungary, the status of refugees and the IDPs and their safe return to their home areas, the resurgence of ISIS and terror activities and other topics of mutual interest.
