Erbil, Kurdistan Region, July 31, 2020
Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani issued a statement on the 37th anniversary of the 1983 Anfal genocidal campaigns against the Barzanis in which more than 8000 people were systematically killed by the former Iraqi Ba’ath regime. Below is the statement:
Today we mark the 37th anniversary of the Anfal campaigns against innocent Barzani civilians in which 8000 people were rounded up from the concentration camps of Qushtapa, Bahrka and Diana in Erbil Governorate on July 31st, 1983, and sent to mass murder sites in the southern deserts of Iraq.
A life in utter despair and gruesome hardship awaited the mothers and the girls who lost their men and fathers to the vicious Anfal campaigns. These brave women took the responsibility of raising their deprived children in the absence of their fathers and brothers who never came back from the death camps of southern Iraq. On this day, we salute the role of these honorable mothers and sisters who defied unimaginable adversities and never gave up.
As we mark this day, we applaud the people of Erbil and its surroundings, including the residents of Harir, Batas and Diana, for their courageous roles in sheltering, assisting and providing jobs to the families who were targeted in the Anfal campaign. Their support and contribution to the affected families will forever remain in our memory and remembered by the people of Kurdistan, especially the victims of Anfal.
We honor the victims of Anfal and all the martyrs of Kurdistan, and pay tribute to their surviving families and loved ones. We will continue our efforts to prevent the repetition of such genocidal crimes in Iraq and the world. We reiterate our position that the government of Iraq must compensate the families of the victims.
