Erbil, Kurdistan Region, 8 September 2019 – President Nechirvan Barzani hailed France and its President Emmanuel Macron for their role in supporting the Kurdistan Region, and he conveyed the appreciation of the people of Kurdistan for the friendly and supportive relations with France, hoping for further improvements in bilateral ties.
In a meeting with the new consul general of the Republic of France to the Kurdistan Region Olivier Decottignies, President Barzani congratulated Mr. Decottignies on assuming his new role and wished him success in his duties.
President Barzani also highlighted President Macron's active role in supporting the Kurdistan Region, especially in resuming talks between the Region and Baghdad which resulted in normalizing the relations between the two sides and resolving a number of issues. He also praised France for its efforts in settling disagrmeents between Kurdish political groups in Syrian Kurdistan.
In the meeting, both sides discussed the security, political and economic situation of Iraq, and they underlined the importance of cooperation between the Kurdistan Region and the federal Government of Iraq in maintaing security and stability, especially in disputed areas.
