President Nechirvan Barzani met with a delegation from the United States Congress led by Congressman Adam Smith. They discussed the latest developments and demonstrations in Iraq, the future prospects of the political process and the security situation in Iraq.
President Nechirvan Barzani expressed his appreciation to the United States for supporting the Kurdistan Region and Iraq in the fight against ISIS terrorism. He reiterated that the Kurdistan Region attaches great importance to its relations with the U.S. Congress. They also discussed the progress of discussions between Erbil and Baghdad and efforts to solve outstanding issues under the framework of Iraq’s Constitution. The current political situation in the disputed areas, confronting the dangers of ISIS resurgence and the United States role and assistance in this regard was also discussed.
President Barzani highlighted coexistence and harmony among all religious and ethnic groups in the Kurdistan Region. He also highlighted the reforms in the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs and thanked the United States and other countries within the International Coalition for helping the Kurdistan region in this field.
Both sides also exchanged views on the developments in Syria, the refugees and their influx to the Kurdistan Region and the importance of security and stability in the wider region.
The meeting was also attended by the Vice Presidents of the Kurdistan Region and the United States Ambassador to Iraq.
