Erbil, Kurdistan Region, 16 September 2019
Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani reiterated that the Kurdistan Region will forever remain a land of coexistence and tolerance, in a statement on the 50th anniversary of the Sorya village massacre. Below is President Barzani’s statement:
Today, we commemorate the 1969 massacre of Sorya village in Zakho, carried out by the Baath regime. We honor the 39 children, women and men, Muslims and Christians, who perished in the attack.
The Sorya mass killing was another atrocity committed, indiscriminately, against all religious and ethnic communities of Kurdistan. The same year, more than 70 children and women were burned to death in a cave in Daka village in Akre.
On this solemn day, we reiterate that the Kurdistan Region will forever remain a land of coexistence and tolerance for all and we call upon the Supreme Criminal Tribunal of Iraq to address the case and compensate the families of the victims.
We honor and salute all the martyrs of Kurdistan.
