Erbil, Kurdistan Region, March 10, 2020
The Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani issued a statement on the anniversary of the March 11, 1970 Agreement, a historic declaration of autonomy for the Kurdistan Region within Iraq.
Below is the full statement:
Today, a half century has passed since the March 11 Agreement was signed between the Kurdish leadership and the Iraqi government. This agreement was an important achievement of the great September Revolution that had started a decade earlier in Kurdistan. The agreement was the outcome of years of struggle, resilience and sacrifices made by the people of Kurdistan, led by late Mustafa Barzani to gain their basic and legitimate rights. It was this agreement that served as a cornerstone and led to further achievements of our people.
To mark the anniversary of the March 11 Agreement is to honor our people’s struggle and sacrifices made to obtain our legitimate rights. It also shows the conviction and faith of the people of Kurdistan in peaceful resolutions to disputes. The agreement also serves as an important historic lesson for political factions and groups in Iraq that, ultimately, dialogue, mutual respect and recognition of the rights of others, are the only right path to peace and a prosperous future.
As we mark this important anniversary, we reiterate our long-standing commitment to help resolve Iraq’s issues, and remain ready to help and continue to support building a lasting political stability in Iraq.
On this day, we salute the many fallen heroes who sacrificed their lives in the peaceful struggle of the people of Kurdistan.
