Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani received Mr. Nikhiro Arakawa, the incoming Head of Japan’s Consular Office in Erbil on Sunday. The President congratulated Mr. Arakawa on assuming office and expressed readiness to fully support him in his new mission in the Kurdistan Region. The President hoped that Japan maintains stronger presence in the Kurdistan Region and looked forward to continued Japanese projects in the Region. The President also hoped that Japan will consider the share of the Kurdistan Region in their future aids and financial support to Iraq.
The new Head of Japan’s Consular Office in the Kurdistan Region expressed happiness at assuming office in the Kurdistan Region and stressed that his country is interested in its relations with the Kurdistan Region. Mr. Arakawa affirmed his willingness to develop areas of cooperation between the two sides and hoped for continued strong cooperation between Japan’s Consular Office and the relevant institutions of the Kurdistan Region.
President Nechirvan Barzani reiterated his appreciation for the works and contributions of Japan in the Kurdistan Region, which were carried out by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) as well as Japan’s government agencies over the past years. The President expressed gratitude to Japan for considering the share of the Kurdistan Region in their financial loans to Iraq.
Discussions between the two sides also covered Iraq's bilateral relations with Japan and opportunities for cooperation between the two sides in various fields, Erbil-Baghdad relations and the ongoing talks to resolve their disagreements, Iraq's upcomming elections, confronting terrorism and the threat of ISIS, as well as other topics of mutual interest.
