Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani received Mr. Karim Ahmad Khan, Special Adviser and Head of the United Nations Investigative Team to Promote Accountability for Crimes Committed by Da’esh (UNITAD).
The latest on UNITAD’s ongoing work and investigations, as well as the impact of the spread of Covid-19 were discussed at the meeting. Both sides reiterated the importance of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region’s continued cooperation and coordination with the UN investigative team. The significance of the UNITAD’s mission was also highlighted as it strives to ensure justice for the victims of ISIS crimes by bringing the perpetrators to the courts of justice.
President Nechirvan Barzani and Special Advisor Karim Khan emphasized that serving justice to the victims of ISIS will lead to restoration of trust, stability and peaceful coexistence, as well as reconstruction of the devastated areas and the return of the displaced people to their homes.
The President highlighted his support for the work and the mission of UNITAD and expressed the Kurdistan Region’s willingness to work with the team and the government of Iraq to accomplish its` mission. The President also commended the efforts of the team and encouraged them to accomplish the mission of the UNITAD according to their timetable, which would be in the best interest of all communities in Iraq, since everyone was affected by ISIS atrocities.
Both sides also discussed the amendment of the relevant laws concerning the prosecution and trial of the perpetrators, the significance of paying attention to the education system in regards to improving tolerance, peaceful coexistence and the prevention of such horrendous crimes in the future.
The process of finding and collecting evidence of the crimes committed by ISIS, the digitalization of the files, training the judges and working in line with the international standards and procedures were also highlighted at the meeting.
