President Nechirvan Barzani met with Italy’s Defense Minister Guido Crosetto in Erbil.

The meeting, attended by Kurdistan Region Vice President Sheikh Jaafar Sheikh Mustafa, the Minister of Peshmerga Affairs, the Italian Ambassador to Iraq, and senior officials from both sides, underscored Italy’s ongoing military and diplomatic engagement with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. Discussions focused on the contributions of Italian forces in combating terrorism, the current situation in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, as well as the potential threat posed by the resurgence of ISIS.

President Barzani extended his appreciation to Italy for its steadfast support, particularly in the fight against terrorism and its efforts to strengthen Iraq and the Kurdistan Region’s security infrastructure. He reiterated the Kurdistan Region’s commitment to working with Italy and other partners to ensure peace and stability in the region.

Defense Minister Crosetto reaffirmed Italy’s strong partnership with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, praising the Peshmerga forces for their critical role in defeating ISIS. He highlighted the importance of sustained international collaboration to address shared security challenges and stressed Italy’s commitment to supporting the region.

They also discussed the resurgence of ISIS and acknowledged that it continues to pose a considerable threat to the security and stability of Iraq, Syria, and the wider region. This means that sustained support is required. They also touched on the crucial role of the International Coalition in supporting Iraq and the Kurdistan Region and highlighted the importance of Iraq maintaining a neutral stance in regional matters and conflicts.

Recent developments in the region, especially those taking place in Syria and their impact on several issues of shared interest, were another topic of conversation during the meeting.
