President Nechirvan Barzani welcomed Admiral Brad Cooper, the Commander of the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), along with a high-ranking delegation that included several military officials and advisors.
During their meeting, they addressed the relationship between the U.S. and Iraq, as well as the Kurdistan Region, focusing particularly on security and military matters, including the ongoing threat posed by ISIS. They exchanged insights regarding stability in both Iraq and Syria, along with U.S. support aimed at enhancing military and security capabilities in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
President Nechirvan Barzani expressed gratitude to the U.S. for its assistance in the fight against ISIS, which included support and training for the Peshmerga, as well as contributions to the reform efforts within the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs. He reiterated the Kurdistan Region's commitment and willingness to further strengthen their partnership and cooperation.
In response, Admiral Cooper expressed appreciation for the Kurdistan Region's contributions to the fight against ISIS and reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to supporting Iraq and the Kurdistan Region as allies. He underscored the significance of these relationships and stressed the necessity for improved collaborative efforts between both parties to address terrorism and eradicate the dangers presented by ISIS.
The meeting, which also included Vice President Jaafar Shekh Mustafa, Minister of Peshmerga Affairs, several officials, and the U.S. Consul General in the Kurdistan Region, covered topics such as Erbil-Baghdad relations, the situation in Syria, and the latest developments in the Middle East, along with various issues of mutual interest that were discussed.
