President Nechirvan Barzani was received by His Holiness Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican today.
Later, during their meeting, President Nechirvan Barzani highlighted the situation of the communities in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region and emphasized that Christians, along with all religious and ethnic communities, are an essential part of the history, culture, and national identity of the Kurdistan Region, and together contribute to shaping the future of the country.
The President conveyed the sincere gratitude of the Kurdistan Region and Iraq for the Vatican’s spiritual and historical role in promoting dialogue and coexistence around the world. He also honored the historic visit of the late Pope Francis and formally invited His Holiness Pope Leo XIV to visit Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
In response, His Holiness the Pope expressed his happiness regarding the meeting and commended the culture of tolerance, coexistence, and mutual acceptance in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq. He also praised the Kurdistan Region’s efforts in providing shelter and protection to vulnerable populations, including Christians, during difficult times.
Another part of the meeting focused on the overall situation in the region, and both sides expressed their hopes for peace, stability, and prosperity for all humanity.
