President Nechirvan Barzani met with Ms. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, during the Munich Security Conference.
The President expressed appreciation for the European Union's assistance to the Kurdistan Region, as both sides emphasized the importance of strengthening the European Union’s cooperation with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region across various sectors. They also discussed the current situation in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, as well as the developments in Syria.
President von der Leyen praised the recent parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan Region and expressed her appreciation for President Barzani’s perspectives on Syria and the wider region. She recognized the valuable contributions of the Kurdistan Region and commended the Peshmerga for their bravery in the fight against ISIS. Additionally, she emphasized the crucial role of women in the struggle against ISIS and terrorism.
