President Nechirvan Barzani meets with Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Bagdanov

President Nechirvan Barzani extended his congratulations to the prime minister of Russia on taking office and expressed Kurdistan Region’s willingness to further expand relations with Russia in all sectors. The president also praised the activities of the Russian Gazprom in Kurdistan Region’s energy sector.

On Wednesday, January 29, 2020, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani received Mr. Mikhail Bagdanov, the Russian president’s representative for Middle East and Africa, who is also Russia’s deputy foreign minister. Russia’s Ambassador to Baghdad and Consul General in Erbil and an accompanying delegation also attended the meeting along with a group of diplomats and officials at Gazprom.

In the meeting, which was attended by Kurdistan Region’a vice presidents and a number of KRG officials, Mr. Bagdanov conveyed greetings from Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russia’s prime minister to President Nechirvan Barzani and commended the president and the developments in the Kurdistan Region.

The two sides discussed the situation in Iraq and reiterated the importance of efforts aimed at deescalating tensions in the wider region. Both sides also underlined that Iraq should not become a battleground for disputes and rivalries among regional and global powers. They also shed light on the demonstrations in Iraqi cities and the ongoing efforts to designate the next Iraqi prime minister. Erbil-Baghdad pending issues and the importance of coordination between the Peshmarga and the Iraqi army in the disputed areas were also put to discussion.

The situation in Syria and the presence of the multinational forces, the situation of the Kurds and their future status within Syria and the role of Russia in the country were also highlighted. They also spoke about the threat of terrorism and how to face it, the Peace Process in the Middle East, the latest developments in the Palestinian-Israeli question and the situation in the wider region.
