Sulaymaniyah, Kurdistan Region, May 4, 2021
Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani visited the city of Sulaymaniyah on Tuesday and held a meeting with the leadership and members of the Change Movement (Gorran).
In the meeting, attended by the Vice Presidents of the Kurdistan Region, the political process and the latest developments in the Kurdistan Region were discussed. It was emphasized that free and fair elections must be held under conditions which will ensure the free expression of the opinion of the people in the choice of the legislatures. It was further affirmed that the developments in Iraq, the greater region and the world call for stronger unity and consensus among all parties in the Kurdistan Region.
President Nechirvan Barzani reiterated that Kurdistan Region Presidency and the President are determined to make every effort in that direction and for this purpose, the Kurdistan Region Presidency seeks to bring together diverse visions, parties and groups with the common objective of safeguarding the national interests of the Kurdistan Region and improving its democratic institutions.
For his part, Mr. Omar Said Ali, the General Coordinator of the Change Movement and the party leadership viewed the steps taken by President Nechirvan Barzani and the Kurdistan Region Presidency as positive and in the right direction, underlining the need to broadly support these efforts, which are in the interest of the political process and all parties.
With regards to the issue of Kurdistan Region Constitution, it was stressed that a modern and up to date Constitution that guarantees the participation, aspirations and rights of all components of Kurdistan Region is imperative, which safeguards the Kurdistan Region and its people, and is in harmony with the free and developed world. For this, it was found that it is necessary for the visions and opinions of all political parties, communities, classes and segments of society to be reflected in the Constitution, with the Kurdistan Parliament to make the final decision regarding its approval.
Following the meeting, and upon answering questions from reporters regarding the purpose of the visit and outcome of the meeting with the Change Movement, President Nechirvan Barzani said: “Today we visited the Change Movement, and later we will visit our friends in the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, as well as the Socialist Democratic Party. As you know, earlier we had a meeting at the office of the Kurdistan Region Presidency in which we made the decision to visit the parties, and work with them diligently to reduce the existing problems in the Kurdistan Region, and exchange views with the parties on the issue of the Constitution of the Kurdistan Region, and for this purpose we met today with our friends in the Change Movement and we will meet with the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan on the same issue later.”
With regards to unifying the Kurdish parties’ stance in the upcoming Iraqi Parliament elections, President Nechirvan Barzani stated that, “the election system and procedures do not allow forming alliances ahead of elections, and this may be uncommon, but no doubt there is a need to unify our stances after the elections, and all parties need to find a framework for cooperation among them. It is clear that when we are together we have better chances to secure some of our achievements in Baghdad, but if we are fragmented, there is no doubt that the Kurdistan Region will be affected negatively, and the efforts of the Kurdistan Region Presidency are to achieve and maintain this unity.”
