The Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani met with the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Iraq, Jeanine Hennis- Plasschaert, on Monday.
The latest political developments in the country and the ongoing efforts to designate a new candidate for the position of prime minister of Iraq were discussed during the meeting. The two sides reiterated the importance of political stability and a new government that addresses the legitimate grievances of the people and safeguards the constitutional rights of all groups and communities. In that regard, the constructive role of the United Nations was highlighted.
The security situation in the country and the threats of the resurgence of terror groups, the increase of ISIS movements and ways to confront them were also put to discussion. The importance of global coalition’s continued support to Iraq and the partnership and coordination between the Peshmarga and the Iraqi army to confront ISIS, particularly in disputed territories, were also underlined.
The two sides also spoke about the economic situation in Iraq and the ways to contain the spread of coronavirus by implementing the protective measures issued by the World Health Organization (WHO) and similar health groups.
