Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani received Mr. Mitja Leskovar, the Vatican Ambassador to Iraq, on his first official visit to the Kurdistan Region since he assumed office.
President Nechirvan Barzani welcomed the Vatican Ambassador, congratulated him on assuming office, and wished him success in his new mission. The President reaffirmed that the Kurdistan Region looks forward to developing its relations with the Vatican and considered the Apostolic Journey of His Holiness Pope Francis to Iraq and the Kurdistan Region as a historic event. The President hoped that the Apostolic Journey will encourage the return of the Christians to their homeland who left Iraq following the war and violence that the country witnessed over the past years.
President Nechirvan Barzani referred to the opening of the Catholic University in Ainkawa township as an important and positive step, stressing that education is the main basis for the progress of society as a whole. The President underlined that utmost attention must be paid to the quality of education and the culture of coexistence and tolerance. The President highlighted that through establishing a wide network of relations with other colleges around the world, universities benefit the most from other experiences and become bridges that promote peaceful coexistence, tolerance and mutual respect among diverse communities.
Mr. Leskovar expressed the Vatican's appreciation to the Kurdistan Region for hosting the displaced Christians and other refugees from Iraq. Mr. Leskovar affirmed that the Vatican highly values the culture of peaceful coexistence in the Kurdistan Region and expressed gratitude to President Nechirvan Barzani, the officials and the people of Kurdistan for their warm reception of His Holiness the Pope.
The President commended the important role of the Christians in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, highlighting that the Christians are an ancient component of Kurdistan who have greatly contributed to the establishment and development of the Kurdistan Region and helped consolidate the culture of coexistence. The President stressed that to ensure the rights of all components of Kurdistan, the Kurdistan Region Constitution, which is currently being drafted, safeguards and guarantees all the rights of Christians and all religious and ethnic communities in the Kurdistan Region.
Discussions also focused on the status of the Nineveh Plain, the conditions of the displaced and refugees hosted in the Kurdistan Region, the latest developments on the Corona pandemic and the vaccination efforts, the upcoming Iraqi elections, Erbil-Baghdad ongoing talks and other topics of mutual interest.
