President Nechirvan Barzani welcomed a delegation from the Russian Orthodox Church, headed by Metropolitan Anthony, who is the Chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate, along with several religious leaders.

During the meeting, which also included the Russian Consul General in the Kurdistan Region, the discussions centered on the status of communities, especially Christians in the Kurdistan Region, the relationship between the Russian Orthodox Church and Christian churches in both the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, as well as the broader relations involving Russia, Iraq, and the Kurdistan Region.

The delegation, which had visited Erbil the previous week to participate in a conference of the Assyrian Church of the East, expressed their pleasure in visiting the Kurdistan Region and praised the harmonious coexistence among its religious communities. They also expressed their appreciation for the protection of their rights and freedoms.

President Nechirvan Barzani regarded the visit as a meaningful sign of support for the Kurdistan Region. He highlighted that the Kurdistan Region takes pride in its culture of coexistence, mutual respect, and tolerance among its communities, and will continue to uphold this culture.

The discussions also included the delegation’s interactions with representatives of religious communities in the Kurdistan Region, the historical connections between the Kurdistan Region and Russia, the significance of dialogue and engagement among various religious and ethnic groups, and their relationships with the international community.
