President Nechirvan Barzani expressed gratitude to Finland’s support to the Kurdistan Region in the war against ISIS and reiterated that the threat and danger of terror still exist. The President also said that the Kurdistan Region does not wish for Iraq including Kurdistan to become a battleground where foreign disputes and rivalries are settled. The President emphasized that restoring stability in Iraq is a fundamental objective that Kurdistan Region works for.
In a meeting on Thursday, January 16, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani congratulated Mr. Vesa Häkkinen on his appointment as the Ambassador of Finland to Iraq and wished him success in his mission. The President also emphasized strengthening ties between Kurdistan Region and Finland.
Ambassador Häkkinen spoke about his visit to his country’s forces who are based in the Kurdistan Region as part of the international coalition against ISIS. The ambassador also spoke about his country’s commitment to support the Iraqi army and the Peshmarga as part of the coalition forces, in particular in areas of training and capacity building.
The two sides also discussed the latest developments in Iraq, meeting the demands of the protesters, the increased efforts to restore peace, Baghdad-Erbil relations and ways to resolve the outstanding issues on through dialogue and on the bases of the constitution. The economic situation and investment opportunities in Kurdistan Region were also discussed in the meeting.
