President Nechirvan Barzani met with French Ambassador to Iraq Mr. Patrick Durel and his delegation to discuss bilateral ties, the current situation in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, and recent regional developments.

Both parties conveyed optimism that the processes for electing the President and appointing the Prime Minister of federal Iraq would be finalized within the established legal timelines, and that a government would be established that fulfills the aspirations of the citizens and tackles existing challenges. They also highlighted the necessity of hastening the formation of the new cabinet for the Kurdistan Regional Government.

They expressed concern over the tense situation in the region and stressed the importance of maintaining peace and stability through dialogue and diplomatic efforts. In this context, they noted that the continuation of the crisis and military conflict would further escalate regional tensions.

Regarding the situation in Syria, President Nechirvan Barzani reiterated the Kurdistan Region’s firm support for the rights of the Kurdish people and all other communities in Syria. He stated, “From the beginning of the events in Aleppo, we have maintained communication with all involved parties to cease hostilities and ensure stability, and we persist in our endeavors for de-escalation.”

Ambassador Durel reaffirmed his country’s support for Iraq and the Kurdistan Region and commended President Nechirvan Barzani’s efforts aimed at fostering peace and stability.

The meeting, attended by Mr. Yann Braem, the French Consul General in the Kurdistan Region, also addressed the peace process in Türkiye, along with other issues of mutual interest.
