Below is the speech delivered by the President of the Kurdistan Region:
Dear Ambassador of Italy,
Dear Consul General of Italy in the Kurdistan Region,
Dear attendees,
Good evening, and a warm welcome to all.
I am both delighted and honored to accept this medal. I wish to convey my sincere appreciation to President Sergio Mattarella, the Government, and the people of Italy for this prestigious recognition.
This serves as a tribute to the enduring relationship between Italy and Iraq, as well as the Kurdistan Region, and expresses gratitude to all those who have diligently contributed to the development and strengthening of this bond over the years.
Italy has consistently proven to be a dependable partner and ally to both Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. We value Italy’s political positions and ongoing diplomatic support, and we take pride in the significant role it has played within the international coalition against ISIS.
Italy’s military support, the training provided to the Peshmerga forces, and its support for Iraqi forces have contributed significantly to protecting the Kurdistan Region and Iraq as a whole, aiding in the defeat of terrorism and the preservation of security and stability.
Today, we are pleased with the ongoing cooperation, particularly in supporting the reform process, the unification of the Peshmerga forces, and the enhancement of their capabilities. We regard this partnership as a valuable investment in the security of Iraq and the stability of the region.
We also acknowledge Italy’s substantial role in safeguarding human culture and heritage within the Kurdistan Region and Iraq. This is exemplified by the archaeological teams from Italian universities that have undertaken significant scientific research and continue to engage in the preservation and restoration of numerous archaeological and historical sites. This commitment underscores Italy’s profound dedication to preserving our shared human heritage.
Our relationship with Italy extends beyond politics and security; it encompasses the realms of economy, investment, culture, education, and archaeology. We are eager to broaden this partnership in a manner that benefits both sides, enhances cooperation among our institutions, and paves the way for future generations.
The purchase of land and the establishment of the Italian Consulate General in Erbil signify Italy’s commitment to enhancing its relations and establishing a lasting presence in the Kurdistan Region.
On this occasion, I wish to highlight that the Kurdistan Region, as a vital component of Iraq, will always remain a peaceful homeland for all religious and ethnic groups, continuing to foster a culture of coexistence, tolerance, and acceptance and to uphold human rights, individual freedoms, and women’s rights. We take pride in this culture, which is a fundamental aspect of the Kurdish identity.
I would like to reaffirm that the Kurdistan Region will remain a responsible and proactive partner in strengthening security and stability within Iraq and the broader region, while also striving to cultivate balanced and robust relations with Rome and all European capitals, as well as countries around the world and in the region, on the basis of dialogue, mutual respect, and shared interests.
From here, I once again express my deep thanks and appreciation for this honor bestowed today. In the name of the people of Kurdistan and Iraq, and in the name of everyone who has contributed to strengthening the friendship between the two sides, I proudly receive this medal today. I thank all those who have worked to develop the relationship that exists today between the Kurdistan Region and Italy.
Thank you once again, and I wish you all a good evening.
