Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani received a US delegation consisting of Mr. Joey Hood, the Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs; Ms. Aimee Cutrona, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Levant Affairs in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs; Ms. Zehra Bell, Director for Iraq and Syria at the US National Security Council; Mr. Scott Simmons from the US Central Command, and Mr. Robert Waller, US Consul General in Erbil.
Discussions focused on Iraq and the Kurdistan Region’s relations with the United States, developments in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region including Baghdad-Erbil relations, Iraq’s upcoming elections, ISIS resurgence and movements, the mission of the International Coalition in Iraq and other topics of mutual interest.
It was stressed that ISIS remains a serious threat to peace and security in Iraq and the wider region. It was also underlined that Iraq and the Kurdistan Region continue to need the International Coalition’s support to defeat ISIS. The importance of cooperation and coordination between the Peshmarga and Iraqi forces was underlined.
Discussions also covered the latest developments in Syria. The delegation reiterated that the United States will continue the fight against terrorism and is committed to assisting its allies in the region against ISIS.
The ongoing talks among Kurdish groups in Syria were highlighted as important steps towards resolving their pending differences.
