March 8, 2026

I offer my heartfelt congratulations to all women in Kurdistan, Iraq, and around the world on the March 8 celebration of International Women’s Day. I wish them continued success and progress in pursuing justice and equality.

Women in Kurdistan have historically played both revolutionary and peaceful roles, demonstrating remarkable courage and resilience. Even today, as the Kurdistan Region works to establish and strengthen its institutions, the active involvement of women across politics, the Peshmerga forces, the economy, management, and education is a source of immense pride for us.

On this significant anniversary, we emphasize that the creation of a peaceful, stable, and progressive society cannot be achieved without guaranteeing the rights and freedoms of all women and enhancing their roles in every area of decision-making. As ever, we remain committed to fostering a culture of equality and justice while eliminating all forms of discrimination and violence against women, whether at home or in public spaces.

Safeguarding the dignity and rights of women is a collective responsibility that involves the government, families, civil society, the media, and all social, educational, and religious institutions. Innovative approaches and strategies are essential to ensure that women have equal opportunities to play a more active role in shaping the future of the country. Kurdistan should consistently serve as a beacon of equality, respect for human rights, and the protection of women against extremism and violence.

On this day, we honor all the women who have made sacrifices for freedom, justice, and their rights. We also pay tribute and keep in memory all women who have been victims of violence.

Nechirvan Barzani
President of the Kurdistan Region
