Erbil, Kurdistan Region, July 31, 2024
Today, as we mark the 41st anniversary of the Anfal campaign against the Barzanis, we remember with solemn respect the memory of the 8,000 Barzani men and women who lost their lives during the violent operations carried out by the former Iraqi regime between July 31 and mid-August 1983 in the forced camps of Erbil.
May their souls rest in peace. We honor their sacrifice and extend our deepest condolences to their families.
The Barzani Anfal campaign, much like other atrocities in the past, aimed to crush the resolve of the people of Kurdistan in their pursuit of freedom. Instead, it only served to tarnish the reputation of its perpetrators. It strengthened the Kurdistan liberation movement, empowering them to confront oppression and dictatorship with even greater bravery.
The resilient Barzani mothers, and the entire Barzani community, faced the hardships and repercussions of Anfal with extraordinary courage. Even through profound suffering, they raised their children with unwavering pride, nurturing a dedicated and capable generation. I extend my deepest admiration to all the esteemed mothers, wives, and sisters who endured through adversity and challenging circumstances. Their dedication is truly commendable.
We express our gratitude to all who provided assistance to the Barzani victims during that difficult period. Their dedication and support will always be remembered. At this juncture, we reaffirm our commitment to pursuing justice for the mass killings against the Barzanis and other atrocities suffered by the people of Kurdistan. We call for international recognition of these events as genocide and emphasize the importance of unity and solidarity among political parties and communities in Kurdistan. Moreover, we advocate for compensation to be provided to the families of the Anfal victims.
Let us pay tribute to the remembrance of all martyrs of Kurdistan.
