Statements
The President of the Kurdistan Region Nechirvan Barzani issued a statement, strongly condemning the rocket attack that targeted Erbil on Monday. Below is the full statement:

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region, February 16, 2021

We strongly condemn last night’s terrorist rocket attack on Erbil, in which one civilian was killed and 9 others were wounded. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and wish the wounded a speedy recovery.

We urge the United Nations and the Security Council to see the seriousness of this terrorist attack and work on eliminating threats posed against the people of the Kurdistan Region by encouraging the Federal Government in Baghdad to implement the constitution, especially  article 140 on the disputed territories.

I urge Iraq’s Prime Minister, the General Command of Iraq’s Armed Forces and the General Command of Coalition Forces in Iraq to resume the important coordination with the Kurdistan Region. Coordination of the Kurdistan Region’s security forces and the Peshmerga with Iraq’s security forces and the Army, in cooperation with the Coalition troops, is essential to eliminate terror threats in all of Iraq.

The lack of coordination and the armed groups operating outside the Federal Government’s authority have increasingly led to regional instability and pose constant threats to the security of the Kurdistan Region. Therefore, I ask Iraq’s Prime Minister to support the formation of a joint committee of investigation by the Kurdistan Regional Government and Iraq’s Federal Government, to find the perpetrators and to bring them to justice.

Nechirvan Barzani
Kurdistan Region President
