Today marks the twelfth anniversary of the genocide and mass atrocities committed against our Yezidi citizens. On this solemn occasion, we pay our respects to the pure souls of the martyrs and honor their memory with the deepest reverence.
The genocide against the Yezidis, marked by the abduction of women and girls and the destruction of their homes and temples, remains an open wound in the heart and conscience of the people of Kurdistan. Unfortunately, after twelve years, our Yezidi citizens continue to bear the consequences of political disputes and the presence of unlawful armed groups.
We reiterate that it is the responsibility of the Federal Government of Iraq to restore security and stability in Sinjar, implement the Normalization Agreement of Sinjar with the Kurdistan Regional Government, strive for Sinjar's designation as a province, and facilitate the withdrawal of illegal armed groups, enabling displaced persons to return safely to their homes.
We assure our Yezidi citizens that as long as even one abducted individual remains missing, our office's dedicated team will continue its efforts to rescue them and uncover their fate. We also remain committed to international initiatives aimed at ensuring that the atrocities committed by ISIS are universally recognized as genocide.
On this occasion, we express our deep gratitude and appreciation to the hospitable people of Duhok and the Badinan region, who, during the most difficult times, opened their homes, schools, and mosques to their Yezidi brothers and sisters. We also extend our gratitude to all countries that have recognized these crimes as genocide and have supported the Yezidi community in various ways.
We salute the resilience of the Yezidi community and pay tribute to the pure souls of the martyrs, as well as to all the heroic Peshmerga who, under the leadership of President Masoud Barzani, confronted and defeated ISIS, sacrificing their lives to liberate Sinjar and safeguard the glory of our nation.
