Today marks the 54th anniversary of the signing of the March 11, 1970 Autonomy Agreement between the Iraqi government and the Great September Revolution led by the late Mustafa Barzani. This agreement was a significant milestone and the first official document in modern history to recognize the rights of the people of Kurdistan. It was the result of the relentless struggle and sacrifices of the people of Kurdistan, which compelled the Iraqi government to acknowledge some of their legitimate rights. This agreement laid the groundwork for all the subsequent achievements of the people of Kurdistan.

On this occasion, it is important to reflect on the troubled history of the Iraqi state and the immense damage caused by the use of force, the denial of rights, and misguided policies towards the people of Kurdistan and Iraqi communities. The Iraqi government's withdrawal from the agreement later unleashed a series of continuous wars, destruction, disasters, and instability that continue to affect Iraq and its people to this day.

Let us seize this anniversary in the Kurdistan Region as an opportunity for political parties to come together, overcome challenges and conflicts, and collectively address the obstacles and accomplishments. It is crucial to safeguard the constitutional rights, the entity, and the federal status of the Kurdistan Region. In Iraq as a whole, we must learn from the painful lessons of the country's past, implement the constitution, protect the federal system, and uphold the rights of all Iraqi peoples and communities. Together, we can move forward with a shared vision.

I extend my greetings on this anniversary of the March 1970 Agreement and pay tribute to the souls of the fallen heroes.

Nechirvan Barzani
President of the Kurdistan Region
