President Nechirvan Barzani received Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs of the French Republic, Jean-Yves Le Drian.
Both leaders discussed Erbil-Baghdad relations, the importance of political and security stability, the future of the political process in Iraq, the relations of the Kurdistan Region and Iraq with France and the ways of further developing it. The two sides exchanged views on the latest developments in the wider region, the situation in Syria and the military confrontations and operations there.
President Barzani confirmed that the tensions in the wider region will reduce attention on ISIS, possibly lead to the terror group’s resurgence and pose a serious threat to the security and stability of the wider region. He also expressed his concerns with the participation of extremist armed factions from the Syrian opposition in military operations in the east of the Euphrates, the humanitarian crises and the possible displacement of the citizens from their homes. President Barzani considered it necessary for the international community to strive to stop the war.
Minister Le Drian expressed support from President Emmanuel Macron and France to Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. Both sides discussed ways the international coalition can confront ISIS resurgence and efforts to end the war in Syria.
President Barzani reiterated Kurdistan Region’s appreciation to France and President Macron for their assistance and support during difficult times. President Barzani considered the visit of the French Foreign Minister under complicated circumstances as a sign of France's support for security and stability in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
Deputy Presidents of the Kurdistan Region, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, French Ambassador to Iraq also attended the meeting.
