The newly-elected Governor of Erbil, Mr. Omed Khoshnaw, was sworn in today and took the oath of office before the Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani. Mr. Khoshnaw is succeeding the late Dr. Firsat Sofi who passed away in November last year from COVID-19.
In a meeting following the ceremony, the President congratulated the new Governor, praised his public service, and expressed hope that he will continue to work with dedication to provide quality services to Erbil Governorate and its people, especially at a time when the Kurdistan Region is facing multiple crises and challenges. The President stated that the Governor must be the governor of all people and all communities.
The President paid tribute to the late Dr. Firsat Sofi, and once again extended his condolences to the family of the late governor and all families who lost their loved ones to the pandemic. The President also honored Faranso Hariri, the Erbil Governor who was assassinated on February 18, 2001.
The President expressed the support of the Kurdistan Region Presidency and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to Mr. Khoshnaw and wished him success in his new mission. The KRG Minister of Interior, Mr. Rebar Ahmad, also attended the sworn-in ceremony.
