Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani received the European Union’s Ambassador to Iraq, Martin Huth in Erbil on Tuesday.
In the meeting, which was attended by the EU representative in the Kurdistan Region, the ongoing protective measures against the COVID-19 pandemic in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region were highlighted, as well as the impact of the outbreak, especially on the country’s economy.
President Nechirvan Barzani and Ambassador Huth also exchanged views on the political process in Iraq, the threats of ISIS resurgence, the working agenda of the newly formed government and the upcoming early elections in the country.
The latest developments on the current negotiations between the Kurdistan Region and Iraq’s federal government to resolve the pending disagreements were also discussed at the meeting. President Nechirvan Barzani emphasized that the Baghdad-Erbil disagreements are not merely about the Kurdistan Region’s share of Iraq’s national budget and the salaries of its employees, but it’s also about stability in Iraq and solving the unresolved disagreements between Baghdad and Erbil. The President urged the EU and the international community to assist Iraq to surpass its issues.
The President and the Ambassador also expressed support for the early elections in Iraq and exchanged views on the role of the EU and the United Nations in the country, the relations of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region with the neighboring countries, and investment opportunities for EU countries’ private sector in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
