Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani received Mr. Matthew Tueller, the United States’ Ambassador to Iraq on Monday.
Discussions covered the latest developments in Iraq, the Kurdistan Region and the greater region. Discussions also focused on US multilateral relations with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, terror threats and ISIS resurgence. Iraq’s upcoming early elections, the future of the political process in the country and the role and policies of the US new administration vis-à-vis Iraq and the Middle East were also highlighted.
Ambassador Tueller reaffirmed that the US is committed to continue its partnership and cooperation with allies in Iraq and the wider region. The Ambassador shared President Nechirvan Barzani’s concerns regarding ISIS resurgence and terror threats in Iraq and the wider region which call for continued alliance and coordination with the Global Coalition to defeat ISIS and other terror networks.
President Nechirvan Barzani described US commitment for supporting its allies in Iraq and the wider region as an important and reassuring message and reaffirmed the Kurdistan Region’s willingness to further develop and expand relations with the US.
Mr. Tueller expressed delight with the graduation of a new group of students from the American University in Dohuk, and affirmed his country’s support to the reform process and unification efforts within the Peshmarga Ministry.
Ambassador Tueller’s trip to the Kurdistan Region and his visit to a Syriac Cultural Center, school and education process in the Kurdistan Region and other topics of mutual interest were highlighted.
