President Nechirvan Barzani praises peaceful coexistence in Kurdistan Region

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani met with Mr. Aydin Maruf, Minister of State for Minority Affairs in the Kurdistan Region, in Erbil on Monday.

At the meeting, the overall situation of ethnic and religious communities in the Kurdistan Region in general and the Turkmen community, in particular, were discussed. Views were exchanged on the role and participation of the Turkmen community in the political process and administrative affairs of the Kurdistan Region. President Nechirvan Barzani stressed that the Turkmen are an ancient and active community in the Kurdistan Region who have maintained a vital role in the development and progress of the Region.

On his part, Mr. Maruf presented a brief overview of the general situation of religious and ethnic communities in the Kurdistan Region and their needs. The Minister touched upon the education and school curricula in Turkmen and Assyrian as well as their cultural and intellectual activities.

The President reiterated the Kurdistan Region’s guiding principle of preserving and solidifying the rich culture of peaceful coexistence, mutual recognition, and tolerance among all communities, faiths, and ethnic groups in the Kurdistan Region. The President stressed that the Kurdistan Region will remain a cradle of peace, harmony, and stability for Turkmen, Christians, Yazidis, kakayees, Armenians, Shabaks, Arabs, Kurds, and other components of the Kurdistan Region society.
