Kurdistan Region President receives India’s Ambassador to Iraq

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani received India’s Ambassador to Iraq, Mr. Shri Birender Singh Yadav, on Sunday in Erbil.

At the meeting, the two sides shed light on India’s relations with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, the general situation in Iraq, Erbil-Baghdad relations, and the ongoing negotiations between both sides. The discussions also covered the COVID-19 pandemic and its implications, as well as the situation of the Indian community in the Kurdistan Region.

The President and the Ambassador emphasized on strengthening economic ties and expanding India’s trade with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. In this regard, the President expressed that the Kurdistan Region welcomes India’s investments and companies to the Region and also commended the role and contributions of India’s labor in the Region.

The two sides also discussed the culture of coexistence and tolerance in both India and the Kurdistan Region. Ambassador Singh Yadav spoke about India’s experience in this regard and praised the atmosphere of tolerance and peaceful coexistence in the Kurdistan Region. President Nechirvan Barzani reiterated the Kurdistan Region’s stance in rejecting violence and supporting dialogue in the resolution of disagreements.

The President congratulated India’s new Consul General to the Kurdistan Region, Mr. Subhash C. Kain, on assuming office and wished him success in his new mission.

The two sides agreed to strengthen relations in all areas of cooperation, especially in the academic field, and acquiring scholarships for Kurdistan Region students to study different specializations in India’s universities.
