Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani received the United Kingdom’s Consul General in Erbil James Thornton on Tuesday.
At the meeting, the latest developments in the fight against COVID-19 pandemic and the Kurdistan Region and Iraq’s ongoing response to the outbreak were discussed. The two sides also spoke about the wide-ranging effects of the global pandemic, particularly on the economy.
President Nechirvan Barzani underlined that it is in the best interest of the country to resolve pending disagreements between the governments of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region in accordance with the constitution.
The abrupt resurgence of ISIS terror groups and their increasing movements and attacks in several areas in Iraq were also discussed. The need for cooperation and coordination between the governments of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region were also underlined in order to counter the serious dangers of ISIS.
Consul General James Thornton reiterated the UK’s willingness to preserve and expand bilateral relations with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. He expressed hope that UK companies find work and investment opportunities in the Kurdistan Region.
The two sides also spoke about the newly formed Iraqi government’s working plans and agenda and reiterated support for Prime Minister Mustafa Al- Kadhimi. The political and economic developments in the Kurdistan Region and the reform efforts in the country were also highlighted.
